Hello Guys, In Today’s post we will talk about starting a fish farming business in Africa especially in Nigeria
Below is an interview between a Nigerian Youtuber based in the UK Phrankleen and a Nigerian Fish Farming experts Ernest Akpede
Phrankleen: So with me today i’ve got a gentleman by the name Ernest who basically has agreed to share the wealth of knowledge in this industry with us and i hope you enjoy, i’d like to introduce himself.
Ernest Akpede: Hey guys, hope y’all doing okay i just want to quickly share my own knowledge and experience in catfish farming for you guys. I’ve been into catfish farming for like a year and a half now i started late 2018 and i’ve gone through two productions i’m on my third production right now and i just figured i could share some of my knowledge with you guys and i reached out to franklin and he said it was okay so Phrankleen thank you.
With my own knowledge, i would say basically it falls under three categories when it comes to catfish farming, which is infrastructure setup, the machinery implementation like what are the things i will be needing to successfully operate my farm, we need to also think of the branding especially when that branding involves marketing eg creating the right logo, creating a business plan and all that good stuff so let’s start with the infrastructure setup.
I kind of wrote a list of all what i want to go through here, that way i follow a plan with you guys that will go straight to the point.
Your Land Acquisition For Catfish Farming
You can get land by either buying it or renting prior to starting your catfish farm, i would usually recommend you buy land because with renting comes obstacles e.g if your customers are already familiar with that particular location, trying to move them to another location might affect your sales. So we like to make sure you’re in a place where you know you’ll be there for a long time.
So under the infrastructure setup, i would say when it comes to getting a piece of land you want to make sure the location is targeting your audience so if you go into catfish farming, you want to make sure where you are putting that land close to your audience. Some places like a university, hotel and restaurant.
We are not going to dive deep into the infrastructure setup what i would say though is you should get a professional. When it comes to setting up the farm for 15,000 that we’re using in this demonstration i would say for 15,000 you need at least 10 pounds either concrete or plastic, you need to get a professional that has been setting up concrete pumps.
Phrankleen: You clarify as we’re going on that they’re going to need 15,000. So what are you saying about buying or procuring a piece of land, what size of land realistically would you advise that they get? would you say a plot or two plots?
Ernest Akpede: I would say a plot would do just fine. You would need to have enough room to accommodate your catfish farm, i know in Nigeria measurements, they have about 100 by 60 that’s considered a plot of land so right that would do just fine for 10 ponds,.
I would say you need to get professionals because if you’re going to invest your money into this you want to do it the right way, the last thing you want to do is invest so much money and find out that there is cracks in your ponds. You do not want to affect your overall catfish farm production.
To make sure the infrastructure setup is on point, you need the services of bricklayers and the services of plumbers, you also need the services of welders, you need a lot of people to get that set up, i don’t want to go into the cost of that because it will vary depending on location and depending on what you get so that being said now you need the machinery as well because if you’re raising 15,000 catfish it will be advisable that you get the right machinery in place because you’re talking about feeding which is a major factor when it comes to catfish farming.
You don’t necessarily have to get the machinery for feeding immediately but that is something you should put in mind because it’s required definitely if you’re raising 15,000. You can decide to opt-out to buy the already processed or the already made floating feed or sinking feed.
You will need to be producing all food on the farm because it is needed. if you must scale in your profit margin, then we’re talking about the generator, of course, you need a power plant especially in Nigeria, we don’t have the luxury of constant power in Nigeria so you need to make plans to get you a generator for your farm it is very important and then you need to set up the farm for electricity and if you intend to go into feed production to sell out to other farmers you also need to like have a processing plan for that as well which can also be located in the farm.
Then we’ll talk about branding, branding is very very important because that’s when it comes to marketing. although i would say catfish has high demand all year round in Nigeria so is the fresh fish and the smoked fish, there’s a high demand for it currently and part of the reason is, not all farmers are successful, unfortunately.
When it comes to catfish farming, if you are able to produce your catfish to scale size you can almost be guaranteed a sale you know most people will come and they will clear up your farm.
